How to Plan your preparation for GATE in last month?

With only one month left for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), candidates appearing for this national level engineering entrance exam must follow an effective preparation strategy in order to secure a high score. In the remaining month, candidates must make sure that the basic concepts, definitions and formulas are completely clear. Dedicated Study Hours: The number of hours dedicated for serious studies depends on student to student. However, interviews done with toppers reveal that most of them devoted a large amount of time for GATE preparation especially in the last one month. On an average, 8-10 hours of rigorous studies should be devoted during the one month preceding the exam.

Rigorous Practice: Test-takers must understand that practice is the key to success. They must solve GATE sample papers and previous years’ question papers as many as possible to be self-reliant about attempting the actual exam. With this, they can also analyse their strong and weak areas. The focus should be on strengthening the weak areas.

Solve Mock Tests: Solving GATE Mock Test is an effective way of getting familiarized with the online exam. This way, they can easily solve the actual test as it will a simulation of mock test. Candidates are advised to attempt as many mock tests as possible.

Use of Virtual Calculator: From 2016 onwards, virtual calculator, an online calculator, has been introduced in GATE. Candidates will not be allowed to carry a physical calculator to the exam hall. They will have to use the virtual calculator for doing all calculations. They must practise on this calculator in order to familarize themselves, as it will help in saving their calculation time during the exam.

Speed Improvement & Time Management: In the last one month, candidates must focus on improving their question-solving speed while maintaining complete accuracy. Moreover, they must work towards completing the test before the allotted three hours, in order to get some time for revision too. This can be done by improving time management skills. Prepare a timetable for studying and stick to it as well.

Quick Tips:

  • General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics are relatively less tough and more scoring, if properly prepared. So, candidates must practice these sections rigorously in order to get a high score.

Important books for these sections-

1. Magical book on QUICKER MATHS by M.Tyra

2. Higher Engineering Mathematics by B.S. Grewal for Engineering Mathematics

  • Do not start any new topic now. This will result in wastage of time which can otherwise be used for revising already studied topics. Don’t do anything which can demotivate you. Strengthen the topics that you already know. This will boost your self-esteem and confidence.
  • Candidates appearing for GATE should make sure that they not taking excess tension because of this. The mind should be relaxed at all times, and good health should be maintained. Don’t over stress yourself. Listening to music, doing meditation, playing a sport, etc. for rejuvenation is a good idea. Breaks should be taken during monotony.
